Highlands, North Carolina

A mountain retreat for a couple living in East Tennessee. They have a historic home in Key West used in winter, and wanted something in a cooler location for summer. They love antiques, and wanted the space to have a similar cozy feeling to the Key West house, as well as their Knoxville residence. The goal was to create a look that was distinctly "mountain", but to add a degree of sophistication and warmth. The typical antler, fern, and twig motifs are common in Highlands, so we created a "New Highlands Look" for them without using those clichés.

The name "Highlands Story" was derived by us one late night over a bottle of Port. We try to name each of their properties. "Story" is the client’s maiden name, so "Highlands Story" was an appropriate name for this property as it remembers her parents, but looks forward to the good times to be had in this new home. The sign with the house name was designed in collaboration with a local artist who made it to appear as if we had uncovered it in a local shop.
